Why Local AI Is Better
for the Climate.
Every time a question is sent to a cloud AI service, it travels to a massive data center — often hundreds of miles away — where thousands of GPUs consume enormous amounts of electricity and water for cooling. A single large-language model query in the cloud can use 10× more energy than a standard web search. Multiply that across millions of users, and the carbon footprint is staggering.
Local AI flips that model. By running smaller, efficient models on hardware already in our buildings, we eliminate the data-center overhead entirely. There are no long-distance network hops, no warehouse-scale cooling systems, and no share of a GPU cluster drawing megawatts around the clock. The energy stays local — and when paired with our on-site solar, it can come from clean sources we control.
